This past July we headed out to Lake Powell with LOTS of extended family for a huge camping/boating/quad riding getaway. We were quite the site as we had TONS of vehicles and trailers that encircled a huge area for us to set up “shop” for the long weekend getaway. We had everything for our camping adventure…starting with the regular ol’ tent, and then we named all the trailers, the Motel 6 & Super 8, the Holiday Inn, the Marriott and the Ritz Carlton… each one served it’s purpose of protecting us from the elements…i.e. trapping in the excessive outdoor heat and making us wish we were sleeping outside at night =)
It was truly the D I R T iest and hottest vacation I’ve ever been on (coming from a very pregnant girl of course)…and despite it all…it was actually such a great time. Sure we had 3 of our 4 boats break, and we didn’t get any cool monsoon storms I had hoped for…it was H O T and there was a lot of sand everywhere, but the view was awesome and the water was the perfect temperature to play in. We had tons of shade and a what seemed like a few hundred ice chests of cold drinks. The company was wonderful, the food DELISH, oh SOOO yummy!! And most importantly, my kids, everyone’s kids, had a BLAST and that’s really what the vacation was all about. Nights were spent round a campfire, hoping it was cool enough for smores. Days were spent digging in the sand, taking turns on the boats, wave runners and multiple quads. The Dads were busy with the boys (and girls) fishing, quad riding and being on jet ski’s and there was plenty of downtime to just RELAX and get some sun…too much sun. And at the end of the day I would at least have a shower, a bed and a fridge with cold drinks to manage through the not so fun parts of camping…a perfect mix!
Please don’t email me about the importance of sunscreen as you see these…I assure you we lathered them up every couple of hours…it was just THAT crazy hot and being out in it ALL DAY was the only choice…so yes, we have some pink eyes and skin from too much sun exposure =)
Connor…doesn’t he just look like he’s made for beach living? The blue eyes and the blond surfer hair…such a cutie!
I’m so grateful for all the fun family memories created in these vacations and that I have so many cousins I am close to and can meet halfway for short weekend trips like these.
We look forward to doing it again next year…but this time we’re going much earlier when the summer isn’t quite so HOT. =)
