Persistence & Play

Persistence and play…that’s how we conquered this sweet session with my niece Kaitlyn.  We wanted to surprise her parents with these photos, but getting dressed, getting her hair done, standing still and eye contact are all difficult things for this sweet girl…so we had to get creative!

I look at this first photo and I’m in awe at its sweet innocence and that we got it!  There were plenty more images with her looking away, but thankfully with a fast shutter, some songs and some play we captured quite a few shots of Kaitlyn to show her personality and some of her spunk.  I hope her parents are as excited as I was to see some of these!

Kaitlyn suffers from a form of Autism and much of the time things are very overwhelming for her.  This one captures how she handled most of the session…it was overstimulation for sure, but we kept it short and she managed it so well.

She has come such a long way in a few short years. She communicates and socializes so much more now that she attends school and works with specialists to help her in those categories.  A juice box sure helped to calm her a bit too…

That image above was a favorite. I never get such an up close look into her eyes WITH eye contact…what a fun treat to see!

This last one pulls on my heartstrings a little.  While shooting this session, and dealing with all the emotion it caused her, I was overwhelmed at how hard it must be for HER and how on the inside that must feel awful to experience so much emotion while interacting with multiple people and playing.  I’m so glad that there are so many trained people to specialize in treatment to help these precious kids cope with life and all the overwhelming things it brings!

Kaitlyn, you are a ray of SUNSHINE to your family and it was so wonderful to be able to capture your beauty and spirit through my lens!! I only wish I could steal a tiny bit of your energy =)
