About Jen...

Thanks for checking in to learn more about me.  I love my life and seriously feel really blessed!  Photography is a passion of mine and it definitely continues to challenge me to push the envelope more and more.  I have been photographing weddings and families for more than 10 years and feel incredibly blessed to do what I love surrounded by those that I love!!  I am a mom to three and married to the love of my life.  I've chosen to work from home and while often challenging, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I have 2 boys and one little girl.  Brennan is almost 7 and is my little red head.  People LOVE his red hair. Though he started out with the fiery personality I carried as a youngster, he's grown up to be quite the respectful child who has a love of learning. Dawson is a middle child...need I say more?  He's a tender hearted almost 4 year old whose main method of communication is the perpetual whine.  He has an infectious smile that sure makes it hard to put the camera down around him.  Emery is our little girl who is 1 year old.  She's super laid back and easily entertained...the complete opposite of both her brothers.  She is loved by all the boys in our house but wants only to be with Mommy...and after a couple of Daddy's boys, I'm really ok with that!  My husband and I will be married 10 years this year.  I can hardly believe it's been that long.  He too has a job that he loves in Real Estate Development.  He's very supportive of me in my business and really helpful with the technical side of things (he insists he's even taught me a little Photoshop here and there...I beg to differ).  If there's anything he'd change about my job...it's all the romance I'm around that he has to compete with!!  I'm a hopeless romantic for sure!  But he has some of that in him too, it just tends to go into hiding sometimes!

My family is the most important thing to me and is definitely the reason I love photography so much.  I can't describe the satisfaction I get in capturing wonderful moments for people who are be able to keep them as memories forever.  I truly am grateful that I can have a career working for so many amazing people during some of their most intimate life moments.

In the bag...

I use only the highest quality cameras and lenses!  My main camera is the Canon 5d Mark II.  It is a full frame camera with over 21 megapixels and an expanded ISO range from 50 up to 25,600.  WOW!!  This is cutting edge camera technology...at least for the moment!  I also use only Canon "L" series lenses.  The "L" stand for luxury and man does it ever live up to its name!  Aside from giving me a good arm workout, these lenses have low dispersion glass and are some of the fastest lenses available.  While I typically prefer the wide aperture and great depth of field offered by the 70-200 f 2.8 lens, I also have a handful of other great lenses...

17-40mm f 4.0 USM                                                                                                     28-70mm f 2.8 USM                                                                                                   35mm f 1.4 USM                                                                                                              I also have a Canon 580EX and 580EXII Speedlight.

For Editing I use Adobe Lightroom 2.0 and Adobe Photoshop CS4.

My little obsession

I have obsessed about one thing for a long, long time…my need for a girl!  And though that need was filled, she sure still has me smitten nearly every single day!

Emery-18months-4

Maybe it’s because of her age, I sure love the personalities that emerge at this age!  She’s 19 months and she’s trying to assert her independence;

Emery-18months-6

she is fiesty like her mommy and yet cuddly and lovey when she wants to be. She doesn’t throw real difficult fits like her brothers did at this age, but she is VERY particular and signs of drama queen have already begun.  I think it’s pretty funny when she throws her fits and gives a dirty look with an emphatic “uh…..huh” when we ask if she wants this or that.  I think the whole “she’s the 3rd child” makes her “stages” less stressful for me too because you see that they come and they go.  I LOVE watching her run to her Daddy when he gets home, she grabs onto his legs and needs immediate hugs, kisses and cuddles. I also love how she knows the routine of giving hugs and kisses before bed, that’s like the ONLY time she will go near her brothers without being mad at them for something (little stinker).

Emery-18months-2

One thing for sure, I LOVE dressing and doing the “girl” thing!  Playing with her hair, oh I LOVE those curls.

Emery-18months-7

Deciding on clothes, layering and accessorizing are STILL quite fun for me. And now that she is getting into her play with her “babies” I really enjoy watching and teaching her. I loved playing babies and it’s fun to move from the balls, cars and trains to strollers and babies!

Emery-18months-3

I’m trying to be better about pictures as she’s getting so big and I don’t feel I photographed her as much as I wanted in the first year, so now I’m trying to make up for lost time and capture her in everyday life, more often. I was really on top of it with the boys, but each kid brings more distractions and makes it more difficult…here’s to hoping I can be better.

Emery-18months-5Itsy, bitsy, spider…her favorite!

Emery-18months-1What’s not to love? =)

Be prepared – A friendly reminder

I just had an interesting after school conversation with my boys and it reminded me that I really haven’t thought of or role played this topic for some time. Brennan got to visit with a fireman at school. He proceeded to excitedly tell me that if I ever don’t want to be a photographer anymore, I can go through 17weeks of training and be a fireman and then he shared with me lots of exciting fireman job information. Like how their walkie talkies have special buttons that are alarms and how many minutes their air tanks last for, and he even got to try on his coat!  The boys were excited, so I propose the question, “what do you do if you wake up one night and the hallway is on fire and you can’t get to mom and dad?”

The answers came plentiful…SHUT the door, hide on the top bunk or under our bed or in the closet. Stay up high because that is better and never open the windows!  Seriously, I was thinking man has it been THAT long since we’ve reviewed?  Seemed they got EVERY answer WRONG. Dawson proceeds to tell me he should lock the door and when the fireman comes he can come and unlock it…um, yeah, that’s not how it works!! It seems it may be as long as two years ago that we role played all of this with our kids, crawling on the floor, stuffing something at the crack, rolling over if we are on fire, practicing everything.  The thing is, it’s just not something you think of everyday!

So we reviewed, no locking any doors and NO HIDING! Stay by the window and DEFINITELY open it and try to break out. Use anything in your room to break the window like the ladder to your bed, Dawson looked horrified, “no mom, you can’t break the window or you could go to jail.”

We then we reviewed other emergencies, what happens if mom or dad gets hurt and you can’t wake us, Brennan had this right, “call 911.” But then Dawson says, “or you can just call 691, that works too.”  So, I think we will revisit this idea again soon. Clearly we need to replay these scenarios and rehearse, I remembered these things and ingrained them with my first child, but haven’t remembered as well to teach Dawson these important things.  Heck I even asked Brennan if you call 911 if someone was drowning, his answer was no. I don’t think he realized I really meant DROWNING, not just playing or being silly.

So, here’s a different blog post from me…remember to work through emergency scenarios with your kids =)

The “H” family – Arizona Newborn Photography

I’m back from vacation and ready to share this sneak peek with you. I visited the “H” family at their home last weekend to welcome their new little baby girl to her first photo session. She was a great first time model and her big sister was sure a delight to be with as well. Here’s a peek of a few of the favorites from this session.

Little Lacey – 6 month photos

Lacey is the daughter of my friend Nicole, she was 6 months and in need of some new pics of her cuteness and blooming personality. She was post nap and a little timid but her mama promised me she’s so smiley, thankfully she shared a few of those smiles with us!

I tried hard to make more black and whites but couldn’t get over her gorgeous baby blues, she has stunning eyes and black and white didn’t do them justice.
