Emery’s Room

Ok…if you know me one thing you’ll know is I LOVE decorating.  And I don’t think I’m that good at it…but I’m really good at copying…thank you PINTEREST!!  And since I only get to have one little girl I guess she got spoiled since her room is the ONLY (mostly) finished room in our house.

Every week I love to check into some of my favorite decorating blogs yet I RARELY show off my own spaces.  CUZ there is ALWAYS SOMETHING I want to finish/redo and I never find my decorating really that “share” worthy.  Soooo, even though I have things I need to change or add to this room too…I’m going to share it anyway.  Because MAYBE you like decorating too?  Or looking at other’s decorating?  And if you don’t, at least you can appreciate the use of larger photos in her room on this old’ photography blog!!

If you see this post and want links to items purchased or paint colors, comment and I’ll try to get my act together and add that on here sometime (cut me some slack I did say this is a PHOTOGRAPHY blog)…but I’m guessing maybe no one cares? I’m going with that for now…

The misses is the only girl so she gets her own room right now…and because of that we did a Queen bed so it can double as a guest room when visitors come.  It’s been VERY handy and already used plenty of times…

Above…the kitchen is actually supposed to be in our playroom and I wanted to make a reading space with that rug and chair, but I haven’t done the book holders yet so the kitchen works…and Easton loves to go play at it, which works for me…

Below…the frame is a Custom Frame with a 20×20 pic of Emery at age 2 riding her trike…I super duper LOVE it.  Don’t EVER underestimate the use of LARGE prints in decor.  Also below…I kind of need HELP with the shelves and that wall is calling for another large print, but I haven’t found/taken the right one.  Let me know if you have an opinion on improving the wall with the shelves…feels busy and lacks STATEMENT…(thus the no up close photos of it).

Oh and the cute little wall by the door…with some of my favorite outfits when she was a wee babe…love.  Hooks are flowers from Pottery Barn Kids from a few years ago.

Alright, I didn’t show the closet that my husband built out with shelves and I painted pink and I didn’t show much detail…so in “decor talk” this is a fail share…but I hope you enjoyed my pics a little anyway…maybe sometime I’ll take a few more if I get that other wall improved.

Oooh… it looks soooo good! Kate says, “That’s not Emery’s room!” Has it really been that long since we have played?!?!?! A sleepover is in order for sure! I love everything you did! Congrats! Makes me want to finish Kate’s room now. I got so far, and then NOTHING. I am so close. How come it is so hard to finish the little details?

Jen- This is so precious! I love her bed spread. Just don’t let her have chocolate milk without a stopper:) Love the hanging outfits with her blessing dress. So cute! Sofie loves her kitchen in her room. I love it. She must be your favorite girl:)

Have you met my baby??

The last time I posted pics of this little big guy he looked about like this…4months..

5 months…

6 months

This next one could go down as a recent FAVORITE…he’s sooooo cute!!

7 months

8 months moving from the faux hawk to the curls…lots of them like his sister had.

9 months…getting big, standing in his bed, but still army crawling everywhere

Almost looks like he’s giving me the “thumbs up”

And most recently at 10months…with more hair than I remember the others having at this age and an appetite that could give his oldest brother a decent competition…here he’s sitting in the built in, also known as his FAVORITE place to play lately…and of course…crazy hair…

His favorite things are FOOD, MOMMY, FOOD, DADDY and FOOD…THE END =)

Can someone please tell me how it’s been almost a year already??  =( Sniff, sniff…my last baby…

Children’s Responsibility Board GIveaway

Someone told me that FALL was here, but then I went outside and I realized they were TOTALLY lying!!  But instead of slumping in my chair and getting more mopey…I made a decision…

FALL GIVEAWAYS START NOW!!!

I’m going to share some of my “favorite” things with YOU this Fall and it starts TODAY.  This giveaway is for those of us parent’s who are sick of hearing themselves speak like a broken record all.day.long…and who want to pass the “responsibility” over to their children for their daily routines.

My kids are good kids, but being a bit of a perfectionist…I kind of like things to go just.like.I.have.planned…I want homework done and papers signed and lunches made BEFORE 5 minutes AFTER we are supposed to leave for school.  And I got kind of tired of feeling like I was a broken record reminding and asking xTHREE kids usually asking a few times per kid…it sure made our mornings and bedtimes feel like I was always nagging and I wanted it to be more “happy”.

After trying a few different “systems” and not sticking to it, here’s my NEW plan I put together for my school aged boys.  (Excuse the photos of this dark hall with NO natural light…they are a bit funky)

These Responsibility Charts are Dry Erase Boards!!  I’ve pre printed some of their repetitive daily tasks on the list and kept a few open lines for things I might need to fill in.  Their Chores aren’t listed here since they vary based on household needs so I write those on our family board in the afternoon.

GIVEAWAY INCLUDES

1 – 12×18 Customized Responsibility Board.  Board is Dry Erase and comes with dry erase marker, adhesive and magnet to attach to magnet board or wall.  Design will be the same color/style but with YOUR photo and text.

TO WIN this giveaway leave a comment for one of each of the following…you must leave a comment for EACH of the following items for one entry per comment

1.  Follow my blog

2.  “Like” my Facebook Page

3.  Share this giveaway on your Facebook page

4.  Share your best tip for getting kids to listen and obey without being a wicked witch =)

GIVEAWAY CLOSES in one week, Monday, October 7th @ Midnight.

Want to know more about how we use our Responsibility System?  Read below…

They get one point for every task and 20 points = $1…easy peasy.  Right now they have about 15 or so daily responsibilities.  So I give them 5 behavior points at the start of each day.  Bad behavior, fighting, yelling, not listening etc. loses 1 behavior point per occurence. They also have to do these tasks on the list without constant nagging in order to earn the point.  So if said child is asked THREE times to do their backpack or brush their teeth, they still have to do it, but they don’t get the point credit.  I used to feel REALLY passionate about NOT paying kids for things they should just do for being in our family but I’m turning a new leaf on that idea after adopting some ideas from the book The Entitlement Trap.  I’m not perfect in the system yet, but now there is no “allowance” in our house…you do work/behavior expected and you get paid.  If you don’t meet the goals then you don’t earn the money to buy things you want…and we really try not to buy a lot of their “wants”. One of my greatest life desires is that my kids will grow up “RESPONSIBLE” with money and in work and I feel they need to start YOUNG at trial and error with real money so they can learn how to MANAGE money…  This has proven to be a good tool for our kids as they work hard to save for things and then we let them SPEND so they have the feeling of accomplishment when they earn and spend on something they really wanted.  They each are required to save and donate some of their money as well.  10% goes to tithing @ church and at least 20% to savings.  Most the time though, I find they rarely spend too much as they are saving for BIGGER things. Can I say how much I loooooooove that?  Bikes, IPODS etc are their goals and things I would normally have to buy for them but I LOVE that they “GET” work and they “GET” money and THEY ARE WORKING/EARNING/SAVING for things they value and want.  It’s super exciting that at only 7 and 10 years old they understand a little tiny bit of how the world works…you have to EARN your keep.  I think the reason they are good at saving has to do with the fact that I don’t give them cash…I’ll have to share the system of HOW we pay soon…I feel like cash just burns a hole in their pocket..and gets lost…and the whole “he took my dollar” stuff too!!  Our new “no cash” system has been SO MUCH MORE SUCCESSFUL!!

There you have it…comment away for your chance to win.  And if you don’t win and still want one, I can make a customized version for your child for $40.

Sooo… if I for some reason don’t win.. Are you going to sell these babies?

Kelli GiguiereOctober 1, 2012

My tip is… If they aren’t sharing or they are being mean, I put them in timeout. Even if I have to sit with them for a few minutes. No kid likes to be left out of the fun!

I LOVE those boards!! One thing I do with my kids is – they only get video games on Saturdays and they have to get their chore list done first. They have to get them done by noon in order to play and if they’re done by 11:00 they get 30 extra minutes. It works pretty well.

Such a cute and creative idea! I LOVE LOVE LOVE these!

I find that if I make sure that my kids are eating well and on time and are getting enough sleep things tend to go more smoothly during the day. Then I don’t have to get grouchy at them so often.

I shared on facebook. Oh another tip is we set weekly goals during FHE. My kids have gotten a lot of things done that way. (Faith in God, Personal Progress, Scouts) They get to pick out a candy bar if they reach their goal. If we have three weeks in a row that the whole family reaches their goal we do something fun as a family. It actually works well for Blake and me too. It helps me exercise more, read scriptures, write letters, clean out closets. I love it!

I’m not trying to win really because I’m family, but I just have to say how much I love this and absolutely agree! I saw it in your hall and Dawson was showing/telling me all about it! I love it! I’m a new mommy, but when the time comes and is most appropriate for their ages I will most definitely will be doing this! So FYI for the future when I’m wanting/needing your help Jen to do this same thing with my kids! 🙂 Thanks for sharing and good luck to everyone in the giveaway! Something I’m still going to share with others because it’s such a great idea! 😀
